Comment

Kinutani Koji

I look forward every year to attending the final day of the contest as a judge and seeing the truly wonderful drawings by children.
There is a variety of works, from drawings passionately filling the entire paper to works more delicately drawn but just as expressive in their messages. Though younger children may be less skilled technically, there were many works that bring joy and resonate with the viewers. To me, every drawing is a winner, so it is always difficult to choose the award winners.
Why are children's paintings so powerful and beautiful? I feel that their works are rich in colour and expression. As a university professor and educator, I am familiar with the selection of technically proficient artworks during university entrance examinations. However, technical skill alone is not enough to be an artist or painter. When one relies solely on skill, all artworks tend to turn out the same, lacking in their messages.
Children's works may not be as technically advanced as those with more training, but they are richer in sensitivity that many grown-ups no longer possess. The drawings make me hopeful that in the future, these young artists will become the protectors of our beautiful planet.
This contest is a must-see for adults, as the children teach and task us with much food for thought. I am sure that their messages will resonate with you and offer you a meaningful time of contemplation.
